A year after hearing about the Technological Singularity

A year ago I heard Ray Kurzweil on a BBC radio interview. I wrote down some thoughts at the time.

A year later it seems, that the concept is getting a bit more mainstream. (Of course a BBC interview is already mainstream). In 2010 and in 2011 this year, the Singularity has been discussed many times in the New York Times, Time magazine had a cover article , etc.
Forbes has a blog "Robot Overlords" devoted to the subject. But few people (in Amsterdam) have heard of the concept.

What I didn't expect was an astounding AI demonstration like IBM Watson...

Another important development are the Microsoft Kinect Hacks (for robots) : See this parody Kinect Self-Awareness Hack

It is interesting to note that people do think in a linear fashion and can't get to grips with exponential progress. An example is Paul Allen who in his 2011 autobiography Idea Man wrote:

"Though I won't say that a singularity is impossible, I believe that it is centuries away at best...It took forty years to develop a computer chess program that could consistently beat the best human players,"

That shows me that he is thinking in roughly equal steps: 40 years to do this, 40 years to do that, 40 years for the next thing after that, etc = centuries. In exponential thinking if each step takes 1/2 the time of the previous step, you a get totally different scenerio. That is acceleration. Things should only get really interesting around 2025, when computers are more than 10 000 times faster than IBM Watson today.

The world's most expensive exercise machines. The 0 minute a day workout.

In February I test drove Paul van der Meer's pimped TWIKE in Amsterdam. Basically the TWIKE (TWin bIKE) is a car with 2 hometrainers built-in.

Now while writing a blog on it and looking for "human electric hybrid" on Google, I've come across the Human Car. A car for four oarsmen !

Both machines are in my perception competitors to the ROM exercise machine. You use the TWIKE and Human Car in time you would otherwise be commuting anyway. That makes them, the 0 minute exercise machines.

and they are the opposite of the Fatmobiles: The motorized wheelchair shopping carts that gigantically fat people use at the grocery store because they are too fat and lazy to walk.

Many people are suffering from Diseases of Affluence and Wikipedia lists "Less strenuous physical exercise, often through increased use of a car." as the first cause.

So remember www.facebook.com/pages/Youre-fat-not-disabled-Get-off-the-motorized-shopping-carts and take a Twike or Human Car for a drive instead!

OK, but the prop will require power to do this.

The dW_t behind the turbine simply depends on how much power it's
producing, and can be almost anything.
The maximum power is produced when
dW_t = W * 2/3,
in which case the wind behind the turbine is
W-dW_t = W - W*2/3 = W/3
This case is the Betz limit.

Sure, blowing on the turbine will allow it to make more power. But this
blowing itself requires power, and the net power will be less than

He's probably thinking that the prop is a wind turbine. It's actually
a real prop, and _takes_ power from the wheels. So the BUFC is not

The only use we *intend* for it to have is:

2) To demonstrate that it's a bad idea to try and substitute intuition for science.

However, it does have some interesting aspects. One such aspect is the somewhat bizarre outcome that you can theoretically harness an unbounded amount of energy from the wind - if your windmill is allowed to move through the wind. A traditional windmill has a very definite limit to the amount of power it can produce for a given amount of wind. However, a moving windmill can continue to produce more power as it moves itself through the wind.

It's hard to say whether this will become any sort of practical reality, but there are folks using the principle - including our sponsor Joby Energy.

Osmotic Power aka Blue Energy aka Salinity Gradient Power to 'pump' water out of NL instead of a "gemaal"?

Norway has an Osmotic Power plant.The plant is driven by osmosis that naturally draws fresh water across a membrane and toward the seawater side. This creates higher pressure on the sea water side, driving a turbine and producing electricity.

Why not use Osmosis to `pump` fresh water out of Holland instead of creating electricity?

These guys (PDF) thought about using osmosis to create electricity to power a pump ( gemaal )at Lauwersmeer. If you skip the electricity production and just use the Blue Energy pump directly, it should be less expensive.

Hallo John,

Folmer vroeg mij of ik u wilde mailen over de kwaliteit van de wedstrijd najaarstraining dit jaar.
Het gaat dit jaar beter dan de afgelopen jaren. Bij de dames gaan 16 dames mee naar Brugge. Dat er een dames 8 komt is zoals altijd wel een zekerheid.
Bij de heren gaan er 24 man mee naar brugge. 12 lichte en 12 zware roeiers. De kans dat er 2 achten komen is in mijn ogen en in de ogen van de coach aanzienlijk. Mede door de energy challenge die veel sterke dames en heren heeft getrokken als de nieuwe inrichting van de afroeiperiode was de aanwas in de najaars trainingen groot en goed.
Zodra de selecties rond zijn zal ik u nogmaals mailen over de gang van zaken!

Hartelijk dank voor je steun van de Energy Challenge. Het was wat mij betreft een groot succes! Ondanks het slechte weer hebben 177 studenten meegedaan. Op jouw aanraden heb ik Bart Straatman van het College van Bestuur samen met Roel de prijzen laten uitreiken, dat was erg leuk en positief, we hadden de aandacht van de hele zaal. Why we can't see the Technological Singularity coming

This is a graph of Ray Kurzweil's prediction of Exponential Growth of Computing. It is an important part of explaining the "technological singularity" in which in a short space of time, human thought will be surpassed by Artificial Intelligence (and / or transhuman intelligence).

Kurzweil's graph is on a logarithmic plot, so the effects seem limited somehow. If you roughly plot the same data from 1960 to 2010, you can see the reason why so many people are disappointed in advances in Artificial Intelligence compared to what they expected.

This is a simple graph I made myself using the data from Kurzweil's graph above but using an everyday normal(linear) scale.

You could be forgiven for finding it a bit implausible that the blue line is going to surpass the red line shortly after 2020 based on the data presented in this graph.

But when (and if) the blue line does surpass our own number of calculations in a fashion that Kurzweil predicts in his logarithmic graph above and in his books then it will happen in a what feels like a flash -> BOOM -> you can't see it coming until it almost hits, and watching and following afterwards would be impossible for the conventional human brain. In the graph below, instead of the graph of 1960 to present 2010, this is the graph from 1960 to 2025. How old will you be around that time ?

Future: At a concert or conference Herman is filming and broadcasting the audience are looking down at the stream of themselves on their mobiles, which shows them looking at themselves. People at home or at other locations are watching at the same time.

Estimated prime-time audience in first months 5000 - 50 000 people ? Or much more ?

Technical Singularity in my lifetime. ( Ray Kurzweil )

Excerpt from my handwritten diary : April 18th : " Heard a BBC Interview with Ray Kurzweil on living forever with (a) bridge to post biological future. Computers (are) getting more intelligent than humans (and will be) making even more intelligent machines is Technical Singularity. Are we going to experience the end of time as we know it ?

Industrial revolution was more power (than humans could produce), the machine now will not suffer from Information overload but thrive and grow on it. How have I missed this up to now ? "

This concept "when you get it" or as the Dutch say "als het kwartje valt" is mindblowing.

Thoughts:

-It's important to realize that it will take a lot of time (10 years-2010?) before the idea spreads to general acceptance.

-"Experts" people who are daily active with computers will often be the last ones to see or accept this. No one is more aware of present day limitations of computing than they are.

-A lot of people that I have talked to in the past week don't know what Moore's Law is, making comprehension for non-experts difficult as well. (On top of grappling with the quick growth of exponential sequences.)

For now: I am printing out Kurzweil's predictions for the next decade. It's important to know where technology is headed and how it is accelerating. To quote Wayne Gretzky: " I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been. "

-I have read the first chapters of Kurweil's book The Singularity is near. and will finish it. (on my Kindle which he predicted in 2005 for 2010).

-Set a reminder to spend a day looking into the state of affairs next year in my agenda.

-I'll try not to waste my time "preaching" this "rapture for nerds". That's why I am writing this post, so I don't have to repeat myself. (I do see a possible overlap with my religious experience not a contradiction.)

I first encountered Xeno via the Usenet Newsgroup rec.sport.rowing newsgroup on the Internet in 1995.

He asked if anyone wanted help coaching/rowing or whatever. I was coaching a freshman's Eight and Xeno gave me advice and insight into his training.

If I remember correctly he was pulling 1,40 splits on the Concept B for an hour at a heart rate of 160.

Xeno said then "The most important thing for a freshmen's Eight is that the rowers learn to fight."

Good advice.

I hadn't seen this last paragraph on the Google Query Suggestions site before writing this "We try to filter out suggestions that include pornographic terms, dirty words, and hate and violence terms. If you encounter a term that should not be suggested, please let us know by posting in the Google Web Search Help Forum."

The Next Web reported a strange thing when you type in "Islam Is " on Google as opposed to "Christianity is ", no search suggestions appear like "Islam is a religion".

Most software companies say “It is a feature not a bug.” Google said "It's not a feature, it's a bug."

I don't think it's true try it yourself.
Fill in the following in the Google.com search box.

“jews are” No search suggestion
“islamists are” None
“gays are” None
“chinese are” None

“lesbians are” None
“dutch are” Yes search suggestions (apparently the Dutch are NOT insulted easily) !

Besides nouns (groups of people), there are apparently different verbs in the filter besides "are" such as "hate"
"I love" -> Yes we are given suggestions
"I hate" -> Don't be evil, no suggestions.
"chinese hate" Nothing
"Google hateS" Mexicans (obviously)

It's getting colder again, forget Copenhagen

After watching Burt Rutan on Man Made Global Warming, I decided to do (a little) research of my own and graph the raw, primary data, including 2009, of the temperature in my area: Amsterdam.

Rutan says that since 2000 it has been getting cooler, but here it seems to have heated up the past ten years.

On the other hand, the past two years have been colder than the previous three. A climate trend ? I don't think so (the title of this blog is just to get your attention), just as Nassim Taleb says it's ridiculous to look at the Dow Jones on an average day and try to explain a normal drop or increase. It's just noise. As far as climates are concerned even 10 years might be noise. The next decade will probably be a bit cooler than the last, but warmer than the average of the last century (even Rutan says the long term trend is towards more warming). ~~I'd be willing to bet~~ I have bet on www.intrade.com that 2010 won't be the warmest year on record, but I wouldn't readily bet that it will be colder than than the average of the past 100 years.

Burt Rutan has been an inspiration for me since the 1970's when his canard planes were featured in Popular Science. He has now designed the Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo "the sexiest spaceship ever" and will soon begin flight testing.

On Youtube I found the following clip of a talk given by Rutan at the Oshkosh airshow. The video quality is bad, but the content is excellent.

It's surprising how few people have seen this. This talk was given months before hacked E-mails came to light, confirming part of what Rutan says.

You often read in the newspaper things like: "Now 90% of scientists agree with global warming, ten years ago that was 60%." For me that isn't an argument. Rutan says: "Of course Consensus has nothing to do with Science and Science has nothing to do with Consensus."

I want a clockwork rocking chair for an adult (me)

Whenever I try I out a ( steampunk ) clockwork rocking chair. Rocking chairs in general are usually too small for me (190 cm tall) and they stop rocking after a while. I would like one that you could wind up and that would rock for an hour or so like the pendulum of a clock.

The one in the picture was made by Rowland Emett for the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Nowadays Emett would probably be making Apps for the iPhone. We need more IRL engineers with a vivid imagination.

I’ve looked at my issues from so many angles and have changed my approach several times. There’s nothing cast in stone about it, it seems to me.

As I read your latest post of your email exchange with Dieter Brandes, I saw this drawing in my head as possibly the barest kernel you guys are discussing.

It’s not about making a margin. It’s about bringing in a certain amount of money (pink) selling whatever products (type of product, end price, % profit per item or type of item, quantity of product sold is immaterial to this discussion). So, it can be acceptable to have a product (E) that you sell a lot of, make very little off each one, but the sales of E overall adds significantly to what you bring in. (guess I shouldn’t have colored it pink ;)

Anyway – just curious if this is one of the points you’re trying to make.

I suspect trying to make every product be sold at the same % profit makes it easier to run the store ;) Also, this method requires maybe more rigorous cost calculations to make sure they’re representative?

Craigslist CEO : Crooks will be caught

The chief executive of Craigslist has a message for people who try to use the popular Internet advertising site to commit crimes: You're going to get caught.

Violent crimes linked to Craigslist ads in Boston and Minnesota have made headlines, but CEO Jim Buckmaster said Wednesday the site is an "extremely unsafe venue for criminal activity because you're virtually guaranteeing that you're going to get caught."

"That's been the case with nearly every serious violent crime that's been connected with the site," Buckmaster said in a telephone interview from San Francisco, where Craiglist is based. "There's an electronic trail leading to yourself. So don't use Craigslist for crime unless you want to go to jail."

A Minnesota man was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole this month for the 2007 slaying of Katherine Ann Olson, who answered a phony ad he posted for a baby sitter.

And this week, a 23-year-old Boston University medical student was charged with robbing women who advertised erotic services on Craigslist and killing one of them, Julissa Brisman.

"We were shocked and saddened to learn that a horrific crime like this had any connection to the use of Craigslist, and our hearts went out to the family and friends of Julissa Brisman," Buckmaster said.

Philip Markoff, 23, is accused in the death of Brisman, a masseuse from New York City who was found dead in the doorway of her upscale hotel room after being bashed in the head and shot three times. Markoff also is accused of robbing and tying up another woman, and police have said there could be more victims.

Defense attorney John Salsberg has said Markoff isn't guilty.

Buckmaster said the attention Craigslist has received because of crimes linked to it is partly a function of how heavily the site is used and the relative newness of the Internet.

"There are 50 million people using the site every month, and the site has facilitated billions of human interactions over its history. Compared to human society as a whole the risks of Craigslist are low, but they're not zero," he said.

Buckmaster declined to say much about how Craigslist is cooperating with authorities investigating the Boston case but said, "We make ourselves 100 percent available to them and provide them with any and all information we have that they may request."

Law enforcement officials generally ask that Craigslist not comment on what it's doing in specific cases, he said.

Buckmaster defended Craigslist's inclusion of the "erotic services" classification on its sites. He said users requested it so those ads would be posted there, where users can avoid them, instead of being scattered among other ad categories. He also insisted that illegal activity is "absolutely not welcome there."

He said Craigslist will donate 100 percent of its net revenues from those ads to charities, under an agreement announced last November with 40 state attorneys general, though he said figures aren't available yet.

Craigslist's city sites include tips on personal safety and avoiding scams and fraud. Buckmaster said the Minnesota and Boston cases provide an opportunity to remind people that it makes sense when meeting someone found through an online ad to take the same kinds of precautions they should take offline.

"Anytime you're going to meet for the first time choose a public place where there are other people around. ... Consider bringing a friend along. Let someone know where you're going to be and when you'll be returning. Take your cell phone along. Trust your instincts and report suspicious activities to authorities," he said.

Craigslist founder Craig Newmark will attend a benefit concert in Minnesota on May 3 for a scholarship fund at St. Olaf College in memory of Olson. The 24-year-old was slain by Michael John Anderson, 20, who used a Craigslist ad to lure her to his home in the Minneapolis suburb of Savage.

Buckmaster said Craigslist officials were inspired by the Olson family's efforts to keep the focus of the case on Katherine Olson's life and what she meant to her family and friends.

"When there was an opportunity for Craigslist to participate in some way, that was something we were excited about doing," he said.

The lab consists of a sandpit measuring 30x15 meter, a cabin, a large sea container and lots willow trees. There is the bone yard as well. Usually there are only one or two animals living at one time. As soon as the development of an animal is at its end, I declare it extinct and I push it onto the bone yard. The animals there can be seen as the fossils of extinct species. Exposure to sun and rain causes the tubes to fade, making these appear more bonelike with time. The sandpit is the pre-heaven for the beach animals. They are not yet ready to survive the real beach. I still have to train them. Usually I take them out once a year to the real beach to let them get a taste of their natural environment.

The man in the fleece above was one of the other locals, besides myself, who was helping out at the crash site before the rescue services arrived in force.

Via Twitter all sorts of TV & newspapers wanted my story. Ansgar John, who was driving nearby, jumped out of his car and ran to help the survivors. "Some of the people that had left the plane were lying on the ground, a lot of them had back injuries, and some were in shock," he told ABC News.

Ik heb nu een aantal boeken bij Bol.com in de verkoop gezet en het is ongelofelijk, alles (wat courant is) verkoopt voor goede prijzen.
Op dit moment doet Bol in tweedehands (third party) alleen Nederlandse boeken.
Je voert de ISBN nummer in, conditie, prijs en klaar is Kees. Als ze hetzelfde doen met barcodes (ipv ISBN nrs) en Computer Games / DVD's dan gaan ze helemaal los in de (tweedehands) markt net zoals Amazon in de VS eBay lijkt in te halen, zou dit een dreiging kunnen zijn voor Marktplaats.

Groter aanbod

Daniel Ropers, directeur van bol.com, ziet ook steeds meer zakelijk animo bij professionele aanbieders van tweedehands boeken en bij particulieren om via de mediawinkel gebruikte boeken aan te bieden: “Het ‘uploaden’ van boeken, dus aanbod plaatsen, is heel makkelijk en ook nog eens gratis.

A friend of ours recently started his boxing carreer as "Cool" Coen ten Herkel, since his first match he is known simply as "Het Monster van Mokum". Watch his fight and you will see why.(the fun starts at minute 1:35)

Hidde de Vries aka "De beuker uit Blaricum", a mutual friend, heard about the match and boasted: "Het Monster van Mokum would never dare to fight me" ! But when the Monster immediately accepted the challenge and set the date for a 14th of February Saint Valentine's Day massacre, Hidde responded: "Me and my big mouth (bummer !!!)".

Until further notice Hidde will be referred to as: "De Bla Bla uit Blaricum."

Based on this reaction, the video of "Het Monster van Mokum" , the fact that the Monster is coached by Raymond "Hallelujah" Joval , the former International Boxing Organization World Middleweight Champion, and the first round of betting, the odds have now been set.

It doesn't make sense to me that when it is freezing outside you use electricity to cool or freeze air in a part of your house (inside the fridge). Conversely when it it hot outside and you have the airconditioner turned on it has to work against the fridge which is heating up your house (the area behind or on top of it).

I haven't thought this through or done much research, but is seems like a great green investment opportunity. Somebody is probably already working on it . Who ? Let me know ! John@verkoopwinkel.nl

Het bedrijf Brennels uit Kraggenburg is tevreden over de eerste officiële oogst van brandnetels in de Noordoostpolder. In totaal kon 380 ton brandnetels worden geoogst, terwijl was gerekend op een opbrengst van 300 ton. Gemiddeld kwam er meer dan 5 ton brandnetels van een hectare. Brennels gebruikt de vezels van de brandnetels voor de productie van kleding.

Het bedrijf heeft bij de oogst geëxperimenteerd met verschillende maaimethodes. Uit de proeven kwam dat het maaien met een kneusmachine het meest rendabel is. Deze machine breekt de steel van de brandnetel open, waardoor het rotingsproces op het land wordt versneld. Bij het roten komt de vezel los van de bast. Van deze vezel wordt de stof voor kleding gemaakt.

DEN HAAG, 20081010 -- Door beeindiging van het huurcontract gaat de vestiging van maar liefst 1200m2 aan de Loosduinsekade sluiten. De spullen die dan niet opgehaald zijn, zullen vervolgens in de vrije verkoop gaan en kunnen er geen rechten meer aan ontleend worden."
